September 13, 2022. As you know, we have been working tirelessly since November to secure the publication of the Equal Rights Amendment (“ERA”). In the wake of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which took away the constitutional right to an abortion, eviscerated women’s rights to equal protection, and put all privacy-related rights at risk, we need the ERA more than ever.
The effects of the Dobbs decision are being felt far and wide, including by the medical profession. Medical professionals have been have been thrust upon the front lines, given the devastating effect the Dobbs decision has and will continue to have on patient care as well as the medical professionals’ ability to practice in this new, ever-changing environment.
Recognizing this, over the past two months, we have been working with various medical associations, who have increased their advocacy to address the current challenges.
For example, the American Medical Association, American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and National Community Pharmacists Association recently issued a Joint Statement, detailing uncertainty and disruptions in care post-Dobbs, which highlight the urgent need for a federal framework.
We are pleased to report that, last week, our partners at the American Medical Women’s Association (“AMWA”) wrote to President Biden urging him to publish the ERA without delay to save our reproductive rights and guarantee equality for all. A copy of the letter may be found HERE.
We are so grateful for AMWA’s partnership, strong advocacy, and dedication to the fight for gender equality.
